6th graders invent their own bugs!

Art II Students Draw Faces

We took a short break from drawing the whole figure to focus on rendering and shading facial features. Students cut strips from magazines, arranged them in an interesting way, and drew the composition. Here are some in-progress shots.

Figure Drawing Week 3 (Monday)

Today, students looked though magazines to find photographs of people on motion. They used markers to mark the main line of motion in the pose and to sketch shapes of the skull, ribcage, and pelvis. This exercise helps with understanding proportion as well as allows students to draw figures in very active positions.

Figure Drawing Week 2

This week, we studied the human skeleton, which provides structure to the human body. Mrs. Jones, the Biology teacher, was nice enough to let us borrow her full-sized skeleton model for the students to draw.

We started by doing quick, gestural sketches on newsprint.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the students drew the skeleton with white chalk on black paper. They did several sketches of the whole figure, and then they chose a smaller part to focus in on.

On Thursday, the students were given a piece of high-quality black drawing paper and instructed to make a finished drawing of one part of the skeleton. Some students focused on the ribcage or pelvis, while others drew the hands or feet.

Figure Drawing Week 1

During our first week of figure drawing, students in the Art II class drew portraits using only straight lines. Many of them found images in magazines or online, and then simplified them into their basic geometric forms.

7th Graders Paint and Sculpt

The 7th graders worked hard to finish up their Becka Ash-inspired portraits. They had fun mixing colors of acrylic paint. Some even used their fingers!

Here are some finished paintings!

For the next projects, the students made monsters out of clay. They were very creative and also skillfully constructed.

Great job, 7th grade!
